How a paint is made?

Basic knowledge

In a “synthetic” way, any paint is made up of three basic elements: GLUE (or resin), COLOUR (or shade), THINNER. The “glue” allows the colour to adhere to the desired surface, while the thinner prevents that the product hardens in the can. Once the coating is applied, the thinner evaporates, leaving the colour on the wood or the painted metal.

What is

a WATER-BASED paint?

In a water-based paint the main thinner is water rather than an organic solvent, so mostly water evaporates as the paint dries. For this reason EU law sets lower limits for volatile organic compounds (VOC) for water-based products than for solvent-based ones: for example, for interior/exterior trim varnishes and woodstains Directive 2004/42/EC sets a maximum of 130 g/l for water-based products and 400 g/l for solvent-based ones.

The maximum VOC content of any decorative paint or varnish sold in the EU must be stated on the label: it is the figure to check when comparing products.
